El retrat en miniatura: una aproximació al seu estudi

Abstract

[cat] Amb aquest Treball Final de Màster es pretén elaborar un recurs perquè el conservadorrestaurador conegui de manera profunda les característiques tècniques i materials dels retrats en miniatura, així com les degradacions que se’n deriven, i tingui les eines necessàries per elaborar diagnòstics i afrontar les tasques de preservació de manera crítica. Es tracta, per tant, d’un estat de l’art comprès en l’àmbit de la conservació i restauració basat en la recerca i anàlisi de la bibliografia relacionada amb aquesta pràctica artística. L’objectiu principal és, doncs, omplir un buit existent en els coneixements sobre aquest camp, actualment incomplets, de difícil accés i desactualitzats. Aquest estat de l’art es presenta introduït per una reflexió sobre l’etimologia del terme i un recorregut històric per les diferents escoles europees, des del seu origen fins a la seva desaparició amb l’adveniment de la fotografia, incloent-hi els diferents usos i funcions que han tingut. També es planteja la situació actual del retrat en miniatura, dividida entre museus i col·leccionistes. Aquests punts ofereixen un coneixement més profund de les peces i posen de manifest diverses qüestions que el conservador i restaurador haurà de tenir en compte en la seva activitat. La investigació principal se centra en dos objectius específics. El primer consisteix a elaborar una exposició de les tècniques i materials dels retrats en miniatura basada en l’estudi sistemàtic d’una selecció de tractats i publicacions sobre el tema. El segon resideix en presentar de manera clara i ordenada les principals degradacions que presenten els retrats en miniatura, les seves causes i els possibles tractaments de manera justificada. Aquestes propostes d’intervenció o de conservació curativa s’acompanyen d’anotacions i suggeriments, i s’analitzen de manera crítica exemples de tractaments realitzats anteriorment tenint en compte els criteris actuals de conservació i restauració. Per tal d’oferir altres eines de gran valor que facilitin la tasca del conservador-restaurador, es fan recomanacions per a l’estudi analític-científic dels retrats en miniatura atenent a les característiques de les peces i dels equipaments d’anàlisi. D’aquesta manera també es recullen les condicions idònies de conservació preventiva, manipulació i transport per als retrats en miniatura, tenint en compte els materials constituents, de manera individual i en conjunt. Finalment, s’exposen diferents sistemes expositius i es proposen millores aplicables als ja existents basades en les possibilitats tecnològiques actuals.

[eng] The aim of this Master's Thesis is to create a resource for the conservator and restorer to know in depth the technical and material characteristics of miniature portraits, as well as the degradations that derive from them, and to have the essential tools to make diagnoses and respond to preservation tasks critically. It is therefore a state of the art in the field of conservation and restoration based on the research and analysis of bibliography related to this artistic practice. The main goal of this thesis is to fill a gap in knowledge about this field, which is currently incomplete, difficult to access and outdated. This state of the art is introduced by a reflection on the etymology of the term and a historical approach through the different European schools, from its origin to its disappearance with the advent of photography, including its different uses and functions. It also raises the current situation of the miniature portrait, divided between museums and collectors. These points offer a deeper knowledge of the pieces and highlight several issues that the conservators will need to consider in their work. An exposition of the techniques and materials of miniature portraits based on the systematic study of a selection of treatises and publications on the subject is made. The second is to present in a clear and organized way the main degradations presented by miniature portraits, their causes and possible treatments in a justified way. These proposals for intervention or curative conservation are accompanied by annotations and suggestions, and critically analyze examples of treatments performed previously taking into account current conservation and restoration criteria. In order to offer other valuable tools that facilitate the work of the converter-restorer, recommendations are made for the analytical-scientific study of miniature portraits. Thus the ideal conditions for preventive conservation, handling and transport for miniature portraits are considered and proposed as well, taking into account their material characteristics, individually and as a whole. Finally, different exhibition systems are presented and improvements applicable to the existing ones based on current technological possibilities are proposed.
